aussie aussie aussie

so i'm having trouble reconciling the daytime and the night-time while the commonwealth games are on in [all over] my home town

i'm in the prelim stages of thesis - so i'm spending my days reading about race, identity, nationalism. today i read balibar and wallerstein on the relationship between racism and nationalism; they question whether the two are mutually dependent, whether one grows out of the other [which? how?]... then paul gilroy trying to put the politics back into discussions of race and nationalism - he's one of those eminently reasonable theorists whose language is very convincing despite the incredibly radical nature of his proposal to move entirely beyond racialised discourse in modern society... then a range of theorists responding to and critiquing charles taylor and the absence of any ideas of power in his 'politics of recognition'. phew

then i come home, watch australia win gold silver and bronze in every available event, watch the flags waved and the cheering, listen to athletes and spectators mumble most of the words of the national anthem, and of course the stunning parochialism of the commentators.

and i'm just not sure how to put it all together in my head. would welcome any suggestions.
